A fascinating part-12th-century palace in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter has been imaginatively transformed into a modern and stylish hotel. The five-star Neri is located in the square of Sant Felip Neri, between the Cathedral and the Rambla. This is an area of narrow medieval streets where doors open into excellent restaurants, trendy boutiques and art galleries. There is a fun bar which opens onto the square in summer. The restaurant is casual chic and the menu is aimed at sharing delicious creative plates from chef Alain Guiard. Alain is half French and half Catalan and trained with Jordi Cruz where he was head chef under Jordi. The rough stone walls of the original house create a marvelous backdrop for the modern, fresh style of the lobby, restaurant and rooms. Bathrooms are bright and spacious, and there are connecting rooms for families. A superb feature of the Neri is the Roba Estesa roof bar and terrace, which has a small pool and offers a quiet and sunny place to have a drink or enjoy some tapas. There are also sunbeds for guests who want to take a break from sightseeing and shopping.  Hotel Neri is a member of Relais & Chateaux.

The Casa Neri Apartments, Hotel Neri’s six apartments are across the street from the hotel. These are housed in a Gothic building, but are modern in design. The apartments are approximately 480 sq. ft and would be perfect for a family with two small children under 12 years old or one teenager or adult, as there is a sofa bed in the living room. The apartments comprise one king or twin room, sitting room with a sofa bed and a full kitchen. The apartments are compact, but very well designed and there are two on each floor, so it is possible to combine for one family. Bathrooms have showers, double sinks, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers and toiletries. There is free Internet, a TV in the bedroom and the sitting room, a safe, minibar and an iron and ironing board. Concierge service can be used at the hotel. The guests of the Casa Neri Apartments have access to a private pool on the rooftop. The apartments offer superb value in a great Gothic Quarter location.

An interesting addition to JH Hotels and the Hotel Neri is their sister property, the Wittmore Hotel, which has a fabulous restaurant and bar. They have 9 rooms and a roof-top pool. This is an “Adults Only” establishment. Conraban Restaurant and Bar is like a private club with excellent food, cocktails and outdoor dining. A fire crackles in the bar in wintertime. The Wittmore Hotel gives the Neri some extra rooms and a superb restaurant that is close by in the Gothic Quarter. Get directions from Neri to the Wittmore as it is tucked away and difficult to find. Only those in the know, know about this place.
