Joanna’s Comments
GILPIN HOTEL & LAKE HOUSE is a member of the Relais & Châteaux group and a luxurious hotel in the heart of the Lake District near Lake Windermere. The hotel has been in the Cunliffe family since 1988 and is now run by Barney and Zoe, a dynamic young couple who spare no effort in making the Gilpin the best hotel in the area. Food is very important at Gilpin and Ollie Bridgewater from Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck is now executive chef of Gilpin’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Source. Their more relaxed restaurant, Gilpin Spice, which features Pan-Asian tapas is headed up by the previous sous chef from their fine-dining restaurant. There are 30 rooms in the main hotel; ten are in standalone spa lodges and suites equipped with hydrotherapy hot tubs, saunas and rain showers with steam. Rooms in the main house are more traditional in style. (Garden Suites open directly onto the garden.) All are superbly designed and very comfortable.
THE GILPIN LAKE HOUSE is set in 100 acres on a beautiful lake about a mile from the main hotel. There is a boathouse, hot tubs and an indoor swimming pool and spa with two treatment tables for couples. The Lake House has six rooms sleeping 16 people in total. The rooms can be booked as a hotel, but the house also lends itself to families or small celebratory parties. It is perfect for a romantic getaway for couples wanting peace and tranquility in a unique exclusive private setting. Complimentary chauffeur service is available to and from the main hotel for dining.

Local Sightseeing
HILL TOP: Beatrix Potter’s 17-century farmhouse is full of her favorite things; each room has a photo that make reference to a “tale”. She purchased Hill Top from the proceeds of her first book, Tales of Peter Rabbit. Hill Top and the surrounding area inspired many or her books.
DOVE COTTAGE: the home of William Wordsworth, one of the greatest poets of the English language. This cottage is from the 1800s and not much has changed since that time. The poet moved in with his sister in 1799 and it is said that here they had eight years of “plain living, but high thinking.”
SIZERGH CASTLE & GARDENS: A part of the National Trust, Sizergh is a beautiful medieval house on a 1,600-acre estate graced with water features and wildlife walks. The house contains centuries-old portraits and furniture.
LEVENS HALL AND GARDENS: Displaying original oak paneling, magnificent Spanish leather wall coverings, ornate plasterwork and fine furniture, Levens Hall is one of the finest stately homes in south Cumbria. There are 10 beautiful acres of gardens to explore that include beech hedges, a willow maze and a famous topiary garden.
HOLKER HALL & GARDENS: The beautiful ancestral home of Lord and Lady Cavendish, dating back to the 16th century, the hall is situated on 25 acres of gardens that are part woodland and part formal gardens. Beyond is a 200-acre parkland planted in the 18th century to designs by the then Lord Cavendish.
OTHER ACTIVITIES in the area include chauffeur-driven Land Rover tours of the Lake District, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, clay pigeon shooting and boat cruising on Lake Windermere. Some of the most beautiful walking and hiking in England is in the Lake District. Please ask the concierge at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House about these opportunities.
